Signatures with Registration Marks

Overview

To ensure the University maintains its trademark rights, several updates have been made to specific signatures.

The University of Missouri, Mizzou and other high-level unit signatures now include a registration mark on them. Effected signatures are available in SharePoint and should be used on marketing materials, websites and on apparel, merchandise and promotional items.

Guidelines for signatures have not changed, including minimum size and clear space.

Signatures with Registration Marks

  • Mizzou signature
  • University of Missouri signature (restricted use)
  • MU Health Care signature
  • Mizzou Alumni Association logo
  • Schools/Colleges signatures (ex: College of Arts and Science, Missouri School of Journalism, School of Law)
    • Units within a school/college and administrative unit signatures have not changed. Do not add registration marks to other unit signatures.

Using Signatures with Registration Marks

Guidelines for signature use have not changed. These supplemental best practices show how the effected signatures should be applied in common scenarios.

Marketing Materials

  • Print
    • Print materials using any effected signature should include the version with the registration mark.
  • Screen
    • Materials created for digital distribution and LED screens that include an effected signature should use the version with the registration mark.
  • Social Media

Websites

Websites managed by Digital Services will follow these guidelines:

  • The Mizzou signature replaces the University signature in the black ribbon of websites on the Mizzou design system in 2026.
  • Footer signature will default to University of Missouri signature.
  • School/College signature may be used in place of University of Missouri signature in footer on applicable websites.

Websites developed by an approved third-party web vendor will be contacted by Digital Service to update any effected signatures.

Apparel, Merchandise and Promo Items

Mizzou Licensing and Brand Management is educating licensed vendors about this update.

The default signature to send to licensed vendors is the version with registration marks. Units should not remove the registration marks from signatures. To meet production limitations, licensed vendors and Mizzou Licensing and Brand Management may remove the registration mark on a case-by-case basis.
