Branding and Co-Branding Guidelines

About these guidelines

Use these branding guidelines when creating marketing materials (print, digital and social) for all MU Extension programs and MU Extension partner programs. Refer to this website for full Mizzou brand guidelines and resources. MU Extension graphics and templates can be found on MU Extension Way.

A quick reference to important guidelines are listed below:

Terms to know

The following definitions are for terms used throughout these guidelines.

  • Assets: Refers to any marketing materials created for MU Extension programs, including, but not limited to, flyers, mailers, handouts, emails, presentations and social media posts.
  • Audiences: Refers to the intended recipients of the assets. Internal audiences include Mizzou faculty, staff and council members. External audiences include prospective students and the general public. 
  • Co-branding: Refers to assets where more than one partner must be recognized by including a multi-unit signature, partner logos or listing partners in copy. 
  • Mizzou brand: Refers to using the Mizzou brand to create assets. Use Mizzou’s brand colors, fonts and visual graphics.
  • Partner brand: Refers to using a partner-program’s brand colors, fonts and visual graphics when creating assets. 
  • MU Extension Programs: Refers to programs that are not partner-branded. 
  • MU Extension Partner Programs: Refers to programs that have their own distinct brand that is part of a national, regional, multi-state or multi-institutional level program. 
  • Official avatar: Refers to the official MU Extension profile picture when posting assets to social media.
  • Signature: Refers to Mizzou’s logos. All assets must include either the MU Extension signature, unit signature or a multi-unit signature to properly brand each asset. The MU Extension signature may be used to represent one or more MU Extension programs. Only one signature may be on each asset. 

Branding Overview

When creating assets, refer to these groups to decide which one best applies to your program and the assets you are creating. Each group includes an overview, branding guidelines and asset examples. Asset examples are provided to show the guidelines in action.

MU Extension Programs — Internal Audiences

MU Extension Programs for Faculty and Staff

Assets for MU Extension programs that are for MU faculty, staff and council members should use the Mizzou brand and include the MU Extension signature. Example program: Extension and Engagement Week.

Logo: MU Extension signature or unit signature.

Branding: Mizzou brand.

Copy: Include program name in body copy followed by “powered by MU Extension” on first reference when applicable.

MU Extension Programs — External Audiences

MU Extension Programs + No other partners or sponsors

Assets for MU Extension programs that do not have any additional partners or sponsors should use the Mizzou brand and include an MU Extension signature or unit signature. Example programs include: Connecting Entrepreneurship Communities, Forage-Livestock Group, Forest Ecology and Management, and the Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems.

Logo: MU Extension signature or unit signature.

Branding: Mizzou brand.

Copy: Include program name in body copy followed by “powered by MU Extension” on first reference when applicable.

MU Extension Programs + Campus partners or campus sponsors

Assets for MU Extension programs that have one or more campus partners or campus sponsors (including MU Health Care, schools and colleges, divisions, programs, centers, institutes and labs) should use the Mizzou brand and follow the Mizzou internal campus co-branding guidelines. A multi-unit signature must be used. 

Logo: Multi-unit signature. May use MU Extension signature if listing partners elsewhere.

Branding: Mizzou brand. Follow internal campus co-branding guidelines.

Copy: Include program name in body copy followed by “powered by MU Extension” on first reference when applicable.

MU Extension Programs + External partners or sponsors

Assets for MU Extension Programs that have one or more external partners or sponsors should use the Mizzou brand and follow the Mizzou external co-branding guidelines. Example programs include: Community events hosted between several organizations and at least one MU Extension program, and nonprofits working with at least one MU Extension program.

Logo: MU Extension signature or unit signature. Include external partners logos or names on assets. 

Branding: Mizzou brand. Follow Mizzou external co-branding guidelines.

Copy: Include program name in body copy followed by “powered by MU Extension” on first reference when applicable.

Include mention that external partner(s) support MU Extension or program. Ex: The Missouri Food Bank is a valued partner of MU Extension.

Social Media: When posting to social media, partner names may be included in the post copy.

MU Extension Partner Programs — External Audiences

MU Extension Partner Programs + No other partners or sponsors 

MU Extension Partner Programs have their own distinct brand that is recognized at a national, regional, multi-state or multi-institutional level. Assets for MU Extension Partner Programs must include the partner-program logo and MU Extension signature. The partner brand or the Mizzou brand may be used. Example programs include: 4-H, Recovery Friendly Workplace.

Logo: MU Extension signature and partner-branded logo.

Branding: Mizzou brand or partner-branded program branding.

Copy: Include reference in body copy that the program is “powered by MU Extension” when applicable.

MU Extension Partner Programs + Campus partners or campus sponsors

Assets for MU Extension Partner Programs that have one or more campus partners or sponsors (including MU Health Care, schools and colleges, divisions, programs, centers, institutes and labs) should include a multi-unit signature and the partner-brand logo. The partner brand or the Mizzou brand may be used.

Logo: Multi-unit signature (may use MU Extension signature if listing campus partners elsewhere) and partner-branded logo.

Branding: Mizzou brand or partner-branded program branding.

Copy: Include reference in body copy that the program is “powered by MU Extension” when applicable.

MU Extension Partner Programs + External partners or sponsors

Assets for MU Extension Partner Programs that have one or more external partners or sponsors should follow the Mizzou external co-branding guidelines. MU Extension signature and partner-branded logo must be included on materials. The partner brand or the Mizzou brand may be used. Example programs include: SBDC Springfield is a partnership between MU Extension, and SBA and Missouri State.

Logo: MU Extension signature and partner-branded logo. Include external partner logos or names on assets. 

Branding: Mizzou brand or partner-branded program branding. Follow Mizzou external co-branding guidelines.

Copy: Include program name in body copy followed by “powered by MU Extension” on first reference when applicable.

Include mention that external partner(s) support MU Extension or program. Example: The Missouri Food Bank is a valued partner of MU Extension.

Social Media: When posting to social media, partner names may be included in the post copy.
